Joey Gallo smashes two homers, Twins sweep Royals
Joey Gallo smashed a pair of home runs and Joe Ryan made another strong start as the Minnesota Twins completed a three-game sweep over the Kansas City Royals with a 7-4 victory on Sunday afternoon.
After Ryan Jeffers delivered a pair of RBI singles to give the Twins a 2-1 lead, Gallo launched Minnesota's first home run of the season – a 431-foot shot off Amir Garrett – to put the Twins up 3-1.
Gallo came up with two men on in the top of the seventh and took advantage again, crushing a three-run homer that blew the game open for the Twins. The homer capped off a big day for Gallo, who went 3-for-4 with two homers, a double and four RBI.
Despite giving up a home run to Edward Olivares in the second inning, Ryan turned in six innings, allowing three hits, two walks with six strikeouts. Although Jovani Moran allowed a two-run homer to Matt Duffy in the seventh and Emilio Pagan allowed a run in the ninth, the Twins were able to close out the game and the sweep.
At 3-0, the Twins will travel to Miami for a three-game series against Luis Arraez and the Marlins. Tyler Mahle will get the ball against Johnny Cueto in the series opener on Monday night.
