Big baseball news Monday morning as Miami Herald MLB insideer Craig Mish says the Minnesota Twins are closing in on a four-year, $73.5 million contract extension with right-handed starting pitcher Pablo Lopez.

The report has been corroborated by longtime MLB insider Bob Nightengale.

Lopez, 27, has been outstanding in four starts with the Twins this season. He's 1-1 with a 1.73 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 26 innings. He's allowed just 15 hits and six walks. His 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings ranks 10th in the big leagues, just behind his teammate Joe Ryan who ranks fifth with 12.3 K/9. His 33 total strikeouts is actually No. 1 in the majors.

His latest outing giving the Twins a chance against the Yankees on Sunday when he allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings. Gerrit Cole, however, won the pitcher's duel with a complete game shutout.

At an annual average salary of $18.375 million, that would rank 25th among starting pitcher salaries in 2023, according to Spotrac.
