After spending a combined $73 million on free agent starters Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco, the Twins could soon be welcoming A.J. Pierzynski back to to the Twin Cities.

La Velle Neal of the Star Tribune reports that the Twins are "making progress" in contract talks with Pierzynski.

The Twins selected Pierzynski in the third round of the 1994 draft. He debuted with the Twins in 1998 and played catcher for them until 2003.

Pierzynski, 36, hit .272 with 17 home runs and 70 RBI for the Rangers last season.

Neal also reports the Twins are still very interested in Mike Pelfrey, who went 5-13 with a 5.19 ERA last season.
