Do the Atlanta Falcons make more sense as a Kirk Cousins trade partner?

With the Vikings in a 0-3 hole to start the season the fixation by most has been the idea of trading quarterback Kirk Cousins to the Jets. What if there was another team that made more sense and actually has the draft capital to pull of a midseason trade?

Hello, Atlanta Falcons.

"You know there's another team that I could see, which is the Atlanta Falcons," said Purple Insider's Matthew Coller on Monday night's Hot Routez show. "And that would be weird as hell because they play the Falcons after the trade deadline...[Desmond Ridder] is who we thought he was, not good...but that's a team that's ready to win but they have a quarterback that's holding them back."

The Jets idea always seemed at least a little flawed in that they don't have anything to send back to the Vikings. New York can't technically trade either the first or second round pick to Minnesota until after the year because those picks are locked in as potentially going to the Packers in the Aaron Rodgers trade. Also, Zach Wilson is awful so it's a hard no on that quarterback swap.

Meanwhile, the Falcons have their full compliment of picks available. Atlanta also has a second pick in either the second, third or fourth-round coming in from Jacksonville depending on what happens with Calvin Ridley.

The Falcons, like the Jets, are set up to win now but are getting poor play from the quarterback. Worse than even Wilson has displayed in New York.

With a roster that features young, dynamic threats like running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts, Atlanta also sports a good offensive line and a capable defense in a weak NFC South. After not jumping into the Derek Carr sweepstakes this offseason, and sitting at 2-1, the Falcons should be frothing at the mouth to try and get a competent QB this year.

One thing that could get in the way of this hypothetical situation is Atlanta has only $634,606 in cap space, according to OverTheCap. If the Falcons want to go for it this year they could sign Cousins to an extension and alleviate the current cap stress.

"I have to think that there will be, in the next few weeks, teams that make the phone call, especially if the Vikings are sitting there at 2-5 at the trade deadline," Coller said.
