Florio: 'Chatter among people in the league' involving Cousins trade to 49ers
Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins is once again being linked in a potential trade that would send him to the San Francisco 49ers.
According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, there was talk amongst league executives about the trade at the NFL scouting combine.
"Apparently, at the scouting combine there was some chatter, there was some noise, among people within the broader league structure, not the media, but people in the league about Cousins being traded to the 49ers. That was a hot topic at one point in Indianapolis," said Florio. The segment was discussing 49ers QB Trey Lance needing a new start.
The Cousins/49ers links aren't exactly old news as they've been around since before Cousins arrived in Minnesota. San Francisco's head coach Kyle Shanahan was Cousins' offensive coordinator in Washington for two seasons.
Why this particular bit of news is popping up almost a month after the combine happened is a bit curious in itself. Speculation involving a trade of one of the league's starting quarterbacks usually is top-tier topic for any sports site.
Minnesota restructured Cousins' contract this year that, in short, makes this season, likely, his last in purple.
Meanwhile, Lance sees himself — despite being the third overall pick by the 49ers in 2021 — in competition for the starting role in San Francisco with Brock Purdy.
Purdy went 5-0 as the 49ers quarterback, leading San Francisco to the NFC Championship game this last season.
