Former Gophers QB Tanner Morgan released by Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings cut former Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan from the practice squad on Tuesday
Backup quarterback Nick Mullens was inactive for the Vikings' 27-20 loss to the Chiefs with a back injury, which is probably why the Vikings signed Morgan in the first place. Mullens' absence on Sunday put rookie fifth-round pick Jaren Hall in the position of backup quarerback, though he did not play.
In five years as the Gophers starter, Morgan threw for 9,469 yards, 65 touchdowns and 32 interceptions. Morgan was the eighth overall pick by the Michigan Panthers of the USFL but chose to forgo playing in the spring football league, hoping to catch on with an NFL team.
Morgan was working as an offensive analyst for the Gophers prior to be signed by the Vikings.
The 24-year-old was an undrafted free agent and signed with the Steelers only to get released near the end of training camp. He signed with the Vikings last week and his stay with the team lasted less than a week.
Why was he released? It's not clear just yet, but it could be a sign that Mullens is ready to return from his back injury. The Vikings are off Tuesday so additional roster moves might not be announced until Wednesday.
