Here are team records for highest-scoring games in Minnesota sports history
The Minnesota Wild put up 10 goals Monday in a franchise record-setting win.
With the Wild setting a new franchise record for goals in a game, we figured we'd look into the highest-scoring performances by other Minnesota sports teams. Let's dig in...
Minnesota Vikings
54-13 win over Dallas Cowboys - October 18, 1970
The Vikings scored 40 unanswered points before the Cowboys' Calvin Hill scored a garbage time touchdown late in the Week 5 blowout win for Minnesota. The Vikings have eclipsed 50 points only six times in history, most recently in a 50-10 win over Jacksonville on Dec. 20, 1998.
Minnesota Timberwolves
151-131 win at San Antonio Spurs - April 8, 2023
There was no 60-point individual game involved with the Wolves' biggest ever result, just good, solid teamwork. All five Wolves starters and two bench players recorded double-digit points with Anthony Edwards leading the way with 33. Minnesota exploded for 45 points in the second quarter of the penultimate regular season game of the 2022-23 season.
Minnesota Twins
24-11 win at Detroit Tigers - April 24, 1996
Not too many good things can be remembered of mid-90s Twins baseball. Except for one night in April of 1996, when the Twins went bonkers in a 24-run outburst against the Tigers. Minnesota scored three runs in the first inning, three in the second, one in the third, four in the fifth, three in the sixth, two in the seventh, five in the eighth and three more in the ninth. Paul Molitor and Greg Myers each led the Twins with five RBIs apiece.
Minnesota Lynx
124-127 loss at Phoenix Mercury - July 24, 2010
The lone loss on the list belongs to the Lynx. Seimone Augustus dropped 36 points in the double-overtime loss in Cheryl Reeve's first season in charge. Charde Houston scored 21 points from the bench for Minnesota. Four Mercury players (Candice Dupree, Diana Taurasi, Penny Taylor and DeWanna Bonner) scored 20 or more points.
Minnesota United (MLS era)
7-1 win over FC Cincinnati - June 26, 2019
The Loons dropped seven goals on FC Cincinnati in June of 2019, their first season at Allianz Field. Minnesota United's seven goals came from six different players with defender Ike Opara the lone Loon to score two goals. Jan Gregus assisted on three of the goals while Darwin Quintero registered two assists.
Minnesota Gophers football
Pre-modern era - 146-0 vs Grinell - October 22, 1904
Modern era - 66-10 vs Murray State - October 27, 2001
There's no getting around that mind-blowing pre-modern era number. Scores were much more lopsided in the early days of football. According to Sports Reference, the next closest score that day in college football was Georgetown's 47-0 blowout of Washington & Lee.
The more recent single-game record occurred in Week 7 of a 4-7 season back in 2001. The Gophers needed only 186 passing yards from Asad Abdul-Khaliq, who threw for three touchdowns, while Travis Cole threw one touchdown as well. Tellis Redmon rushed for two touchdowns while Thomas Tapeh and Marion Barber III each rushed for one touchdown. Bradley Vance had a pick-six in the blowout.
Minnesota Gophers men's basketball
120-82 vs Indiana State - December 29, 2982
The Gophers closed out the calendar year 1982 in style with a 120-82 win over Indiana State. The win was the Gophers' sixth of the year and came in the midst of a 9-1 start to the season. Minnesota came crashing down in Big Ten play and ended up finishing with an 18-11 record.
Minnesota Gophers women's basketball
116-72 win over Purdue-Fort Wayne - November 23, 2002
Minnesota kicked off a 25-6 season with a 116-72 win over Purdue-Fort Wayne back in 2002. Then a junior, Lindsay Whalen led Minnesota with 23 points and nine assists. Corrin Von Wald scored 21, Kadidja Anderson added 17 and Kim Prince finished the game with 16 points.
Minnesota Gophers men's hockey
16-2 TWICE - Dec. 21, 1979 vs Brown and Jan. 4, 1986 vs Maine
Gophers men's hockey has twice dropped 16 goals in a single game and coincidentally enough, both games ended with the same score lines against northeastern teams.
Minnesota Gophers women's hockey
12-1 win at Ohio State - January 10, 2009
12-0 win over St. Cloud State - December 5, 2014
Gophers women's hockey has twice finished a game with a record 12 goals. The first instance occurred at Ohio State in a 12-1 drubbing in 2009. The second time was against St. Cloud State in 2014, a 12-0 win. Minnesota followed up by blanking the Huskies 7-0 the next day.
