The Vikings have placed linebacker Jordan Hicks on injured reserve after the he was hospitalized from a shin injury suffered in Minnesota's 27-19 win over the Saints on Sunday.

Hicks is now set to miss the next four games, with the earliest possible return being the Vikings' Christmas Eve home game against the Detroit Lions in Week 16.

Players placed on injured reserve have to miss a minimum of four games, not weeks. Minnesota plays the Broncos this Sunday before facing the Bears the following Monday night. Then they have a bye before two more games Hicks has to miss in Weeks 14 and 15 against the Raiders and Bengals.

"After the game, it was swollen up pretty good and under the recommendation of [the medical team] we decided to get Jordan evaluated at a local hospital where he did need a procedure to address some of the complications from that direct trauma to his lower leg, to relieve some of the pressure that was in there," head coach Kevin O'Connell said Monday of Hicks' injury.

Anthony Barr was signed by the Vikings Monday evening, which was a decent indicator that Hicks was expected to miss significant time.

Hicks has been a key member of the Vikings defense wearing the "green dot," meaning he had the headset in his helmet calling the plays and lining up the defense.

The 31-year-old linebacker has 87 tackles, two sacks, one forced fumble and one interception for the Vikings this season.
