Kirk Cousins: 'We'll probably talk about the contract next March'
Kirk Cousins doesn't seem like a man too concerned about his contract status.
"I think we'll probably talk about the contract next March. Until then, just focus on this season and the job to do right now," Cousins said Wednesday from Vikings minicamp.
Cousins is heading into the final year of his deal with the Vikings after the club restructured his contract earlier this year. When asked if there's been talks within the last couple months, Cousins replied: "Nah, just going to work."
If the Vikings move on from Cousins after 2023, they will incur a $28.5 million dead cap hit, according to OverTheCap's Jason Fitzgerald. They could avoid that by trading him before the November trade deadline or give him an extension and hand him the keys to the offense in 2024 and maybe beyond.
Unless he's not telling the truth, Cousins appears prepared to play in 2023 without future guarantees in his contract. That comes with the risk of injury that could diminish or flat out destroy his chance to secure another lucrative deal from the Vikings or another team in the future, but maybe that's easier to deal with when he's already made more than $200 million in his 11-year NFL career.
