Maddyn Greenway, daughter of Vikings legend Chad, is a high school hoops phenom
Minnesota Vikings fans probably remember Chad Greenway as one of the greatest linebackers in Vikings history, but his daughter Maddyn Greenway is challenging for the title of best athlete in the family.
The Providence Academy guard scoredΒ 60 points and scored her 2,000th career point in the Lions' 126-94 win over Minnehaha Academy on Friday night. Greenways' performance also pushed the MSHSL state record for points in a game behind Gianna Kneepkens's 67-point game for Duluth Marshall in 2021 and McKenna Hofschild's 63-point game in 2018.
This would be a great night for any high school basketball player, but it's more impressive considering that Greenway is only a freshman.
Greenway made her varsity debut during the 2020-21 season as a seventh-grader and averaged a team-high 21.0 points per game as the Lions lost to Albany in the Class AA State Championship Game. Greenway averaged 23.7 points per game to lead the Lions to the Class AA State Championship last season and the Lions are 21-2 behind Greenway's 31.4 points per game this year.
Prior to Friday night, Greenway's best performance of the year came on Jan. 28 when she scored 41 points in an 87-80 win over a Hopkins team that features 2023 top 100 recruits Sunaja Agara (Stanford) and Taylor Woodson (Michigan).
In case you were wondering, former Minnesota girls basketball phenom Paige Bueckers' career-high in points per game was 24.5 during her junior year at Hopkins during the 2018-19 season and the career record for career points is held by Braham's Rebekah Dahlman, who tallied 5,060 points from 2008-13.
While Greenway still has a ways to go to chase down Dahlman's record (and a lot of basketball left to chase it), it hasn't stopped the scholarship offers from pouring in. The Gophers offered Greenway a scholarship prior to her eighth-grade season and she also received an offer from UCLA earlier this month.
With Creighton, Iowa, Michigan, Iowa State, Wisconsin, South Dakota State and Maryland also offering scholarships, there's a good chance that Greenway isn't done creating headlines and that more schools will be calling soon.
