Vikings QB drama: Cardinals not shopping Murray; Rams' Stafford to IR?

Does that mean Kyler Murray and Matthew Stafford aren't options for the Vikings?

The Vikings have until 3 p.m. Tuesday to make a seismic trade for a quarterback after Kirk Cousins was lost to an Achilles injury on Sunday, but the market looks to be mediocre with news out of Arizona and Los Angeles.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Cardinals are not shopping Kyler Murray, who has returned to practice and could be in line to start Arizona's Week 10 game against the Atlanta Falcons.

If they're not "shopping" Murray, does that mean he's not on the market if a team like the Vikings came calling? That, we do not know.

Meanwhile, the Rams are reportedly playing with the idea of putting Matthew Stafford on injured reserve after he injured his thumb in Sunday's loss to Dallas. Jourdan Rodrigue, who covers the Rams for The Athletic, reported Monday that Stafford will undergo testing this week to see how he's able to grip the football.

"Chillier conditions in [Green Bay] combined with a bye after are some details in consideration for the short term, but Rams also are not ruling out injured reserve at this point as they are still gathering information that helps discern a larger timeline for Stafford," Rodrigue wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

Stafford's contract and age probably took him out of consideration for the Vikings right away, but in the event that he did cross the mind of GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah or head coach Kevin O'Connell, his thumb injury likely changes those thoughts. Remember, O'Connell was the offensive coordinator in L.A. when Stafford and the Rams won the Super Bowl in 2021.

The Vikings have to either keep things in house, make a trade or sign someone out of free agency to fill the starting quarterback job for however long Cousins is out. Some ideas...

  • Jaren Hall: Vikings' rookie QB he played 11 snaps after Cousins was injured
  • Nick Mullens: Vikings' backup QB who is on IR for one more game
  • Tom Brady: He's retired, but would he listen to an offer?
  • Carson Wentz: He's a free agent...
  • Colt McCoy: He worked out for the Vikings recently
  • Ryan Tannehill: Would the Titans entertain a trade?
  • Matt Ryan: He's retired but reportedly expressed interested in the Jets after Aaron Rodgers' injury
  • Case Keenum: He's a backup in Houston and 2017 seems like forever ago

Hall seems like the surefire starter this week when the Vikings face Atlanta and if the Vikings don't make a trade or sign a free agent it could be the Hall and Mullens show the rest of the season.
