Wild agree to extension with Jonas Brodin
The Minnesota Wild have reached an agreement on an extension with defenseman Jonas Brodin. The deal will keep Brodin in Minnesota through the 2027-28 season and pay $42 million over the life of the contract.
The 27-year-old was the 10th overall selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and has been a staple on the Minnesota blue line since he debuted as a 19-year-old that following season.
Brodin isn't much of an offensive player but his ability to move on the ice puts him as an elite defender. Several teams were interested in trading for Brodin and his career +47 plus/minus rating, but with his contract including a four-year no-movement clause, those rumors will come to an end.
The signing of Brodin locks in the Wild's current group of defensemen. Jared Spurgeon (seven years), Ryan Suter (five years), and Matt Dumba (three years) are all signed to long-term deals, but could also be intriguing trade bait as the Wild look to add forwards this offseason.
