It took 40 minutes, 37 seconds to break the ice but the Minnesota Wild cracked through first and wound up beating the Dallas Stars 2-1 in a shootout Friday night in St. Paul.

After scoreless first and second periods, Mats Zuccarello one-timed a pass from Matt Boldy for a power-play goal with 13:23 left in the third period.

Jamie Benn scored on a short-angle shot to tie the game with 9:35 left in the third.

In the shootout, Zuccarello and Kirill Kaprizov didn’t score while Jason Robertson netted one for the Stars. That left it up to Freddy Gaudreau and he scored.

The shootout went to sudden death and in the fourth round Matt Boldy scored for Minnesota and Filip Gustavsson made a huge save on Dallas’s fourth attempt to seal the win.

Minnesota improves to 29-21-5 and at 63 points they are tied with Colorado for third in the Central Division, which is also good for the second wild card spot in the Weatern Conference.
