How the College Football Playoff will work

To win the national championship in 2024 and beyond, teams will have to run a more comprehensive gauntlet than in years past.

The postseason format will expand to 12 teams, including a system that features the so-called "5+7" model, with the five highest-ranked conference champions earning the top-five positions, followed by seven remaining at-large teams.

The highest four ranked seeds will receive a first-round bye into the quarterfinal round, while the first-round games will be played on campus.
