Georgia spring football storylines to watch

1. Offensive tackle: Whoever steps in for the NFL-bound duo of Broderick Jones and Warren McClendon has some big shoes to fill. The pair didn't allow a single sack all last season as the Bulldogs went 15-0 and won the national championship. Who will have the honor?

That appears to be up to former 5-star Amarius Mims, who logged meaningful snaps at right tackle against Ohio State and TCU in the playoff, and a race between Earnest Greene and Austin Blaske. Saturday gives us an early look at how the chemistry is building between Georgia's edge blockers and the team's novice quarterbacks, themselves learning the protections and getting the feel of the pocket.

2. Transfers: Wide receiver remains an area where Georgia can always use more depth and present more of a threat on the perimeter, and two incoming transfers from SEC rivals could just be the difference. Dominic Lovett comes in from Missouri and RaRa Thomas from Mississippi State. Exactly what role both or either will play remains a wide open question. It's not unheard of for gifted transfers to not get a ton of reps once they arrive at Georgia.

These two could be an exception: Lovett is a speedster out of the slot who can move outside and led Mizzou in catches and yards a year ago; Thomas, who had charges against him dropped this offseason, played 19 games at MSU and last season posted 626 yards and scored seven times in a pass-oriented offense, with an array of creative patterns and the instincts to create space after the catch.

3. Quarterback: The big question for Georgia in its quest for a three-peat remains how to replace Stetson Bennett, and while Georgia doesn't lack for elite prospects at the position, those options are low on live-game experience. Carson Beck has the arm, Brock Vandagriff has the athleticism, and Gunner Stockton has the size.

All need to emerge as team leaders the way Bennett did while trying to maintain arguably Georgia's most important offensive strength: third-down conversions. The Bulldogs were third in college football on that score at 52.1 percent. Only Washington and USC were better, and both those teams return their quarterbacks this season.
