Alabama football radio announcer Eli Gold reveals cancer diagnosis
Eli Gold, the well-known and respected play-by-play radio announcer for Alabama football games, has announced he has cancer.
Gold missed the entire 2022 college football season as he dealt with a health concern, and now he's going public with the diagnosis.
Gold said he is battling a "treatable form of cancer."
"I want to thank everyone for their well wishes and prayers," Gold said in a statement.
"After extensive testing, I have now been diagnosed with a treatable form of cancer. I'm already making progress and hope to get back behind the mic again soon. Roll Tide!"
Gold announced before the football season that he would step away from the role temporarily as he managed a newly-discovered health problem.
Chris Stewart filled the role for the Crimson Tide's 2022 football season while Gold called into some of the broadcasts by phone for updates.
In November, Gold said that among his health issues, he had almost lost the ability to walk and had been in the hospital for 170 days.
Gold, who has worked Alabama broadcasts since 1988, turned 69 in December.
