New details from Alabama football player Tony Mitchell's arrest
We have some new information surrounding the arrest of Alabama freshman football player Tony Mitchell.
The freshman defensive back was arrested last week after evading police while speeding, reportedly driving at speeds over 140 miles per hour, according to AL.com.
After being pulled over by police, Mitchell was found by police to be in possession of 226 grams of marijuana and around $7,000 in cash.
What the police report said
A police report claims that Mitchell admitted to evading authorities and that another man in the car told him to "punch it."
That other man, a passenger in the car, was later charged with carrying a concealed gun without a permit.
Police are charging Mitchell with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell and/or deliver, according to the Holmes Co. (Fla.) Sheriff's Office.
Nick Saban reacts
Alabama football coach Nick Saban responded to Mitchell's legal trouble by suspending the player from the program.
That suspension is indefinite and will allow the program to evaluate Mitchell's status later when it receives more information about the situation.
Saban's remarks — which included the statement "There's no such thing as being in the wrong place at the wrong time" — have been interpreted as being a subtle dig at Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats relating to his response to star player Brandon Miller's legal troubles recently.
Tony Mitchell as a recruit
Mitchell was a highly-regarded high school football prospect from the state of Alabama since his middle school playing days.
Originally a Tennessee commit, Mitchell pledged to Alabama in June as a member of the school's consensus No. 1 ranked football recruiting class.
