A college football player is suddenly fighting for his life, as Furman University defensive lineman Bryce Stanfield was taken to the hospital after suffering a medical emergency during a workout this week, the school announced.

Stanfield was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday after an incident that took place while he was working out and has been placed on life support.

"The thoughts and prayers of Furman's entire football program and university community are with Bryce and his family at this time," Furman football coach Clay Hendrix said in a statement.

Stanfield is a junior defensive tackle on the Furman football team, which went 10-3 this past season and finished a 7-1 stretch in the Southern Conference.

He was active in all 13 of the Paladins' games last fall, recording 13 combined tackles, four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Furman won the Southern Conference football championship for the first time since it shared the title in the 2018 season.

Furman led the Southern Conference in several defensive categories, including scoring by allowing 18.2 points per game, run defense, sacks recorded, and total defensive production.
