College football news: Texas, Oklahoma will join SEC in 2025 despite effort to move in 2024
Texas and Oklahoma kicked off the most recent phase of college football realignment by announcing a move to the SEC, but the schools will not be able to join the conference as soon as they first hoped.
Despite a major effort to jump to the SEC in 2024, the schools were unable to get the job done and will have to wait until 2025 to make the move, according to college football insider Pete Thamel and other reports.
"The effort for Oklahoma and Texas to leave the Big 12 a year early and join the SEC in 2024 has stalled and at this point is unlikely to come to fruition," he said.
The issue came down to a TV dispute.
The schools were unable to come to new terms during their negotiation process between themselves, the ESPN and Fox television networks, and the Big 12 Conference itself.
College football reporter Brett McMurphy added that the effort to join the SEC in 2024 is not "officially dead," but that the parties are not optimistic it can happen "unless somebody blinks."
That means we should almost certainly see Texas and Oklahoma play a Big 12 football schedule for the next two full seasons before joining the SEC in 2025.
