College football transfer portal: SEC considering change to transfer rules

The transfer portal has forever changed college football, but the SEC might be rethinking one part of it going forward.
One proposal the SEC is considering at its spring meetings could have an effect on players trying to transfer from one SEC team to another.
The conference is thinking of removing the intra-conference transfer deadline by moving it back from Feb. 1 to May 1, the current NCAA deadline for all transfer players looking for immediate eligibility.
Last summer, the SEC became the last Power 5 league to let players transfer freely within the league without having to sit out a season.
But the conference differed some other leagues by adding the Feb. 1 deadline for fall sports, including football, and a July 1 deadline for all spring sports.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said the Feb. 1 date "to create time windows that are more consistent across fall, winter, and spring sports."
The SEC saw a few high-profile intra-conference transfers this offseason, including former Georgia receiver Jermaine Burton, LSU corner Eli Ricks, Vanderbilt tackle Tyler Steen, all of whom transferred to Alabama.
Last season, the NCAA changed its transfer portal rules to give players immediate eligibility if they announce their intention to transfer prior to May 1.
Previous rules stipulated that players who transferred from one school to another had to sit out one year after moving to another program.
