Georgia Tech stuns Miami on TD bomb after costly fumble (Video)
Georgia Tech upset Miami on the road Saturday night thanks to a shocking last-second touchdown pass, thanks to a costly coaching blunder by the Hurricanes. As the clock ran down to 10 seconds left in regulation, Tech quarterback Haynes King scrambled and connected with wide receiver Christian Leary as he ran for the goal line behind the Canes' coverage.
Leary brought down King's pass in stride near the 10 and slid untouched into the end zone to give the Yellow Jackets the 23-20 lead. And it all happened thanks to one decision by Miami coach Mario Cristobal that will be debated for a long time.
Miami originally held possession of the ball with a close 20-17 lead late in the fourth quarter, with less than one minute remaining in regulation.
Usually, that would be a good time to take a knee and let the clock run out. But the Hurricanes took a different approach, electing to run the ball on a 3rd and 10 from the Georgia Tech 30-yard line.
Canes back Don Chaney, Jr. fumbled the ball on that play and Georgia Tech recovered, as determined by an official video review.
King hit Malik Rutherford on a 30-yard advance that helped set up the go-ahead touchdown pass for Leary that won the game, in very improbable fashion.
Tech moved to 3-3 with the win, and to 2-1 in ACC conference play, while Miami, which came into the game ranked at No. 17, falls to 4-1 and 0-1 in league games.
