Strange things can happen when Navy puts the football in the air, as we saw during the Week 0 game against Notre Dame

Navy doesn't throw the ball around too often, something we were reminded of when watching the Midshipmen commit the first big blunder of the 2023 college football season in their debut against Notre Dame in Week 0 action.

In the first quarter on Saturday, the Middies attempted to convert a fourth down at the Irish 37 yard line and decided to put the ball in the air.

Unfortunately, that pass attempt ended with two of Navy's players running straight into each other as they looked for the pass from quarterback Tai Lavatai.

Notre Dame's defense caught a break on the play. Had one of Navy's players caught the pass, it would have been a first down in the red zone.

And since then, the 2023 season opener has gone decidedly in Notre Dame's favor, as new Irish quarterback Sam Hartman has received rave reviews in his first game for his new team. Hartman has given the ND passing offense a needed difference-maker, throwing four touchdowns and hitting over 250 yards passing into the fourth quarter.

With an impressive win in the season opener, Notre Dame is working on stronger footing as it works towards its goal of making the College Football Playoff, but greater tests await the Irish on their schedule in the coming weeks.
