Some stunning surveillance footage appears to show Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert as he allegedly broke into a vape store in Lincoln, Neb. this week. Gilbert was arrested on Tuesday on a burglary charge, according to multiple media reports citing the Lancaster (Neb.) Co. Department of Corrections records.

Video of the incident shows a man clad in a mask over his face and using a large block to break in the front door of the business, and cameras inside captured what appeared to be the former 5-star recruit kicking through a second door and going inside.

Gilbert was taken into custody in the early morning hours after he allegedly robbed a vape shop some time before 2 a.m. local time and was taken in with a bag of goods worth over $1,600.

“Obviously really disappointed, really sad for him,” Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule said in response to the incident.

“When we took Arik we knew we had good people to help us with some issues he’s dealing with in his life and they were really proud of the job he’s done in the spring and summer. … (We’re) sad and disappointed for him and his family.”

Gilbert transferred to Nebraska this offseason hoping to catch on with the Cornhuskers and find some stability in the midst of what has been a tumultuous college football career, after short stints initially at LSU and then very briefly at Florida before finally landing at Georgia in 2021.

Gilbert was dealing with what Georgia coach Kirby Smart called personal issues and did not play in the 2021 season, though did appear in three games last year, catching two passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

A former five-star recruit, Gilbert was ranked as the No. 10 player nationally in his class and the No. 1 tight end, and went on to catch 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns in eight starts with LSU as a true freshman.

As a two-time transfer, Gilbert is still awaiting an NCAA decision on immediate eligibility for the 2023 football season after filing a waiver.
