The greatest coach in college football history is calling it a career, after Nick Saban announced he will retire from Alabama, putting an end to a tenure that dominated and redefined the sport for the 21st century, winning seven total national championships, the most among any coach, ever.

Shortly after he addressed the Crimson Tide team, Saban left the team's football facility for the last time as head coach, a moment caught by a fan that spotted his car leaving the area, escorted by police vehicles.

Alabama won six national championships under Saban's leadership, matching the school record established by Bear Bryant during his legendary run.

"We have enjoyed every minute of our 17 years being the head coach at Alabama, as well as becoming a part of the Tuscaloosa community," Saban said in a statement. "It is not just about how many games we won and lost, but it's about the legacy and how we went about it. We always tried to do it the right way."

Alabama appeared in eight of the 10 College Football Playoff semifinal rounds and Saban's teams won at least 10 games in every season, save his debut in 2007.
