Ole Miss football: RB Ulysses Bentley IV transfers from SMU to Rebels
Former SMU running back Ulysses Bentley IV says he is transferring out of the Mustangs program and to Ole Miss for the 2022 college football season.
Bentley led the AAC in rushing during the 2020 season and has started 14 games for Southern Methodist the last two seasons.
Bentley is the second major running back to transfer to Ole Miss this offseason. Former TCU back Zach Evans also landed with the Rebels after entering the NCAA transfer portal in the 2022 offseason.
Bentley led the AAC with 913 rushing yards and set a new SMU freshman rushing record with 11 touchdowns during the Mustangs' 2020 campaign. He earned Co-Rookie of the Year honors in the conference for that performance.
He started eight games for SMU last season and placed No. 2 on the team with 610 rushing yards and four touchdowns, culminating in second-team All-AAC honors. A capable receiver, Bentley also caught 21 passes for 174 yards and a TD in 2021.
Ole Miss in transition
Lane Kiffin led the Rebels to a 10-3 mark last season in addition to a No. 11 ranking in the AP Top 25 poll and a second place finish in the SEC West. But much of the offensive production that led that team is off to the NFL Draft.
Among the departing players are quarterback Matt Corral, running backs Jerrion Ealy and Snoop Conner, wide receiver Dontario Drummond, in addition to 11 other former Rebel players are all gone.
Ealy led Ole Miss with 768 rushing yards last season. Conner was second with 668, and scored a team-best 13 touchdowns, two more than Corral's rushing mark.
But the Rebels also scored a noteworthy transfer in former USC quarterback Jaxson Dart, a 62 percent passer last season who had 1,353 passing yards and nine touchdowns in six games playing for injured starter Kedon Slovis.
Dart, Evans, and Bentley are the current options to maintain the success Ole Miss has enjoyed on offense, a unit that ranked Top 10 nationally and No. 1 in the SEC last season.
