Texas football under Steve Sarkisian comes into a new era as Quinn Ewers and Hudson Card start their battle to be the Longhorns' starting quarterback in 2022.

Ewers, regarded as a generational prospect, originally pledged to Texas in 2020 before switching to Ohio State, and then coming back to Austin this offseason.

"I think he's doing fine," Sarkisian said of the former 5-star recruit.

"I mean, that was his first practice with us. It wasn't perfect, but clearly, he had a decent understanding of what we were trying to do. Naturally, he got four months, five months under his belt in a really good system at Ohio State. So a lot of the concepts are very similar."

Ewers landed at Texas facing enormous expectations as one of the highest-rated recruits in recent memory. He rode the bench last season with the Buckeyes after C.J. Stroud earned the starting position, ultimately leading the No. 1 offense in college football and finishing as a Heisman Trophy finalist.

Ewers didn't see any action until late in the season in reserve during a rout over Michigan State.

"A lot of times, when guys transfer, you see it go two ways," Sarkisian said. "You see some guys come in and really immerse themselves into it. You see other guys kind of wait back and get a feel for how it's happening.

"I think Quinn's done a nice job of kind of immersing himself into it and not being so caught up in, 'Am I the starter or not?' But focusing on what he needs to focus on to be the best player that he can be.

"He's put in a lot of work. I've seen a lot of guys have a lot worse first practices in a brand-new offense and trying to figure it all out. But there's a bunch for us to work on."
