ESPN has fired college football analyst Robert Griffin III just days before the start of a historic 2024 season, according to a report from The Athletic.

Griffin had two years remaining on his contract with the network, which parted ways with the analyst and former NFL and Baylor quarterback as a budget decision.

ESPN hired Griffin three years ago after putting out what media sources said at the time was "one of the best auditions they have ever seen."

He joined the network as part of its "Monday Night Countdown" program leading into Monday Night Football NFL games before being replaced by former Eagles player Jason Kelce.

Griffin also appeared as a color analyst for college football games on the ESPN network.

ESPN's decision to part ways with Griffin comes at the end of its fiscal year, and The Athletic reports that he was a candidate to be let go as his "stock had fallen" recently.

Griffin played in 41 games at the quarterback position for Baylor from 2008 to 2011, passing for 10,366 yards with 78 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, rushing for an additional 33 touchdowns while posting 2,254 rushing yards and a 4.3 yard per carry average.

He won the Heisman Trophy in his final collegiate season, throwing for a career-high 4,293 yards with 37 touchdowns and six interceptions, also personal-best marks.

Griffin was the No. 2 overall selection by the Washington Redskins in the 2012 NFL Draft, and he finished his professional career with 9,271 yards, 43 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions with three teams.
