Rece Davis Reveals Big Ten's Biggest Sleeper Team Ahead of 2026 Season

The Big Ten has dominated the college football landscape over the last few seasons. The conference has won the last three national championships, with a different team winning each year.

Big Ten's Run of Dominance

The Michigan Wolverines won in 2023, the Ohio State Buckeyes won in 2024, and the Indiana Hoosiers took home the crown last season. The Oregon Ducks have also been a consistent contender in the Big Ten since joining the conference before the 2024 season.

The competitive depth top to bottom in the conference makes it arguably the best conference in college football. But the question is whether there is a team outside of those four that can move its way into the upper echelon. The USC Trojans, led by Lincoln Riley, are a common choice for that. They went 9-4 last year and have a roster ready to compete for national championships, according to Riley.

Rece Davis Names His Biggest Big Ten Sleeper

However, on the "College GameDay Podcast," ESPN's Rece Davis went a different route for his biggest sleeper. Davis went with the Illinois Fighting Illini, led by head coach Bret Bielema.

"I'm going to take Illinois," Davis said. "They haven't made the playoffs yet, but they've won 19 games in the last two years. Back-to-back nine-win seasons. That's the first time they've done that in 134 years of playing football. Illinois has had its winningest five-year stretch since '01-'05. 1901 to '05, when they won 37 games. So, Bret Bielema has done a great job there."

Can Illinois Finally Break Into the Big Ten's Upper Tier?

Bielema took over Illinois following the 2020 season when the school parted ways with Lovie Smith. After a slow start that included two losing seasons in his first three years, Bielema won 10 games in 2024 and nine games in 2025. While they have been a good program those two seasons, they haven't quite moved into contention.

That's the next challenge for Bielema. Winning nine or 10 games is an impressive accomplishment at Illinois, but the program needs to take another step if it wants to become a legitimate Big Ten contender.

The conference is loaded with elite programs, and Illinois will have to find a way to compete with the likes of Ohio State, Oregon and Indiana on a consistent basis. That's what makes Davis' prediction so intriguing.

Illinois doesn't have to become a national championship favorite overnight. It simply needs to continue building on the foundation Bielema has established and turn its recent consistency into postseason contention.

If Illinois can make that jump in 2026, Davis' sleeper pick could quickly become one of the biggest stories in the Big Ten.
