Severe weather could force Texas to cancel spring football game

Texas fans are eager to see the 2024 spring football game, but some nasty weather could force the Longhorns to call it off.

Texas Longhorns fans have been awaiting their team's spring football game ahead of a historic season heading into the SEC, but severe weather could force the school to call it off.

The threat of rain and thunderstorms over the weekend could move Texas officials to call off Saturday's scheduled spring football scrimmage -- and there are no current plans to delay or re-schedule the event, senior associate AD John Bianco told the Austin American-Statesman.

"If a weather forecast that includes a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms Saturday afternoon prevents the Longhorns from kicking off the spring game at 1 p.m.," the report noted, and Bianco "said he doesn't anticipate the game being delayed or rescheduled."

That would apparently mark a first in Texas football history, as Bianco said he doesn't recall a time when weather has ever forced the school to cancel a spring football game.

That would be a great disappointment for Texas football fans, who are eagerly awaiting a first look at a team that has been steadily improving under Steve Sarkisian and that last season qualified for its first College Football Playoff appearance.

Moreover, the Longhorns return key personnel, including quarterback Quinn Ewers, and scored some notable transfer additions like wide receivers Isaiah Bond and Matthew Golden.

At last count, Texas sits in third place nationally with +700 odds to win the national championship, and College Football HQ included the Longhorns in our list of credible national title teams in 2024.

Texas officially joins the SEC this season, as well, and is looking forward to a challenging schedule that places a premium on every available practice and scrimmage.

That is, unless Mother Nature has her say this weekend.
