Chicago White Sox Sign Veteran Pitcher to Add to Starting Rotation
After going unsigned for the full duration of the offseason, veteran pitcher Mike Clevinger has finally agreed to a contract. The right-hander is headed back to the Chicago White Sox, according to Robert Murray of Fansided.
At this time, the contract terms are not known yet.
Free-agent pitcher Mike Clevinger and the Chicago White Sox are in agreement on a contract, pending physical, according to sources familiar with the deal.
After trading Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres, the White Sox checked in on Clevinger. The two sides have been in contact since and on Monday, agreed to a contract to bring the right-hander back to Chicago.
The White Sox could certainly use the help in the starting rotation as they've started 0-4 this season. They got swept by the Detroit Tigers and lost the first game against the Atlanta Braves on Monday afternoon.
Once he's built up and ready to go, Clevinger will join Mike Soroka, Garrett Crochet, and Erik Fedde in the rotation. It remains to be seen who will be bumped out once he gets there.
The 33-year-old Florida native went 9-9 last year for the White Sox, pitching to a 3.77 ERA. He made 24 starts last season for the Southsiders. He's headed into his eighth year in the big leagues with the Cleveland Guardians, San Diego Padres and White Sox.
Lifetime, he's 60-39 with a 3.45 ERA. He won a career-high 13 games for the Guardians in both 2018 and 2019. He's made 138 starts over those previous seven years.
