More Home Run Prowess For the Record-Setting Atlanta Braves
After outscoring the Mets 27-3 in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, the Atlanta Braves fell on Sunday by a score of 7-6.
Despite the loss, the Braves still have the best record in baseball at 75-42 and they lead the National League East by 11.0 games, the largest lead of any division leader in baseball.
They also continued to make baseball history in the home run department, where they are dominating.
Sean Murphy hit his 20th home run of the year while Matt Olson hit his league-leading 43rd. The Murphy blast put the Braves in the home run history books yet again.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
the Braves have 6 players with 20+ HR it’s game 117
that’s the fewest team games for any team to reach 6 20-homer players in a season
Olson has 43, Ozzie Albies has 28, as does Austin Riley. Ronald Acuna Jr. has 26 while Marcell Ozuna has 23. Murphy is the other one with 20.
It's not just the number of home runs hit, the Braves also make history when it comes to the distance those home runs travel.
Also per Langs:
the Braves have now hit 22 450+ ft homers this year
NO OTHER TEAM HAS MORE THAN 10 (Rockies)
that’s the most 450+ ft HR by a team in a single season under Statcast (2015), 3 more than any other team (19 by the 2021 Rockies)
With power like this, the Braves are on the short list of favorites to get to the World Series. They'll be looking for their second World Series title in three years, as they also won in 2021.
