Baltimore Orioles' Gunnar Henderson Sets New Team Record in Sunday Win
The Baltimore Orioles rolled over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday afternoon in Oakland. The final score was 12-1 and moved the Orioles to 30 games over .500 at 77-47.
They have the most wins in the American League and are seeking to gain the No. 1 overall seed in the American League playoff picture. They lead the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East by 3.0 games.
Fueling the victory for the O's was rookie Gunnar Henderson. The infielder went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a triple and a home run. He also scored three runs and drove in two.
With his performance, he moved to the top of the team record books.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
at 22 years & 52 days old, Gunnar Henderson is the youngest player in Orioles/Browns history with 4 extra-base hits in a game
prior youngest: Cal Ripken Jr. at 23 y, 10 d on 9/3/83
It's been a great rookie season for Henderson, who is making a case for American League Rookie of the Year honors. He's now hitting .249 with 21 home runs, 61 RBI, and six stolen bases. He's posted an .815 OPS and was hitting third in the O's order on Sunday.
After a lengthy trip on the West Coast, the Orioles will fly back home on Monday and enjoy an off day. They'll start a big series with the division rival Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Toronto is currently 0.5 games back in the chase for the American League wild card.
First pitch on Tuesday is 7:05 p.m. ET.
