Baltimore Orioles Make Baseball History Despite Lackluster Pitching Performance on Saturday
The Baltimore Orioles made baseball history on Saturday afternoon, beating the Boston Red Sox despite allowing 23 hits.
The O's won 13-12 and became the first team since 1930 to win a nine-inning game when allowing 23 hits.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
teams to win a 9-inning game allowing 23+ hits since 1901:
Today Orioles
6/3/1930 Cardinals
6/15/1925 A’s
8/25/1922 Cubs
6/29/1901 Orioles (diff franchise)
teams are now 5-338 in that span when allowing 23+ hits in a 9-inning game (or shorter)
The Orioles used seven different pitchers in the win and all but one surrendered at least two hits.
After the win, the O's are now 90-51 on the season. They are the first American League team to 90 wins and are 4.0 games up on the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East. They are clearly headed for their first playoff berth since 2016 and are also barreling towards the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
The Red Sox' loss dropped them to 72-70 as they remain in fourth place in the American League East.
The two teams will finish out the series on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET as Orioles rookie Grayson Rodriguez pitches against Red Sox rookie Brayan Bello.
Rodriguez is 5-3 with a 4.91 ERA while Bello is 11-8 with a 3.61 ERA.
After the series in Boston concludes, the Orioles will return back home to take on the St. Louis Cardinals.
First pitch on Monday is 6:35 p.m. ET.
