The Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 9-3 on Sunday to take the three-game series against their division rivals.

While the O's scoring seven runs in the first inning was certainly a huge part of the story, Orioles pitching also put up an effort that it never has before in 120 years of playing the Yankees.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

The Yankees struck out 18 times against the Orioles on Sunday. That's their most strikeouts in a game vs Baltimore in series history. The teams first met in 1903.

The strikeout has certainly proliferated over the last 20 years so it makes sense that this record would be recent, but still, getting two-thirds of your outs via strikeout is an impressive feat by a pitching staff that remains the biggest question for the Orioles heading into the trade deadline.

Starting pitcher Dean Kremer struck out seven over 4.0 innings while four relievers combined for the other 11. New flamethrower Shintaro Fujinami struck out four over two innings while Yennier Cano struck out the side in the ninth.

Offensively, the O's were led by Adam Frazier, who went 1-for-4 with a homer, and Adley Rutschman, who went 3-for-4.

The Orioles are 64-41 right now and lead the American League East by 1.5 games over the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees are 55-50 and in last place in the division. They also are 3.5 games out of the chase for the final wild card spot.

The O's will be on the road for a big divisional series at the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday. First pitch is 7:07 p.m. ET.
