San Diego Padres Join Historic Club in Near No-Hit History
The San Diego Padres beat the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night 2-0 thanks to a walk-off home run from shortstop Xander Bogaerts.
While that home run will steal some of the headlines, the real story of the night was Padres' starter Blake Snell, who helped solidify his case for the National League Cy Young award.
He tossed 7.0 shutout innings, surrendering no hits while striking out 10. He took the no-decision but now has a season ERA of 2.33
Reliever Robert Suarez tossed a hitless eighth but closer Josh Hader was unable to hold the no-hitter in the ninth before Bogaerts won it.
With the near no-no, the Padres joined a historic list in near no-hit history.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
In September, there have been 4 no-hit bids to go into the 9th inning or later and none of them were completed. This marks the first time in at least the last 50 seasons 4 no-hit bids that went into the 9th inning or later were broken up in a single calendar month.
The Astros, Brewers, and Rockies all had near no-nos this month.
There have been no-hitters thrown this year by Framber Valdez (HOU), Michael Lorenzen (PHI), Domingo German (NYY) and a combined no-hitter by the Tigers, but these were all oh, so close. Alex Cobb of the Giants also lost a no-hitter in the ninth inning this season.
The Padres are now 74-78 and 5.5 games back in the National League wild card race.
They've won six straight games.
