San Diego Padres' Blake Snell Beefs Up Cy Young Resume with Never Before Seen Stats
Nolan Ryan. Randy Johnson. Pedro Martinez.
All great pitchers. All Hall of Famers.
Justin Verlander. Max Scherzer. Both great pitchers, both future Hall of Famers.
None of them have ever accomplished what San Diego Padres' lefty Blake Snell has done this year.
Per @OptaSTATS on social media:
Last 20 starts for the @Padres' Blake Snell:
1.31 ERA
12.54 K/9
He's the first pitcher in MLB history to have a sub-1.50 ERA with 12.50+ K/9 over a 20-start span in a single season.
Snell continues to hone in on the National League Cy Young award and certainly appears to be the favorite, despite the strikeout prowess of Braves' pitcher Spencer Strider.
Snell helped the Padres to a 6-1 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday by going 6.0 innings. He only allowed one hit and one walk while striking out eight. He's now 14-9 after the performance and boasts a 2.43 ERA.
He's also struck out 217 batters in 167.0 innings. His 217 Ks are tied for the second-most in baseball, tied with Kevin Gausman (TOR) and behind Strider (259).
Snell also won the Cy Young award in the American League back in 2018 with the Tampa Bay Rays. He went 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA that year. While he's had good seasons since then, this year is his first year with double-digit wins since that 2018 season.
One of the most disappointing teams in all of baseball, the Padres are now 69-78 this year. They are destined for a fourth-place finish in the National League West.
