Boston Red Sox on Wrong Side of Something That Hasn't Happened in Nearly Last 100 Years
The Boston Red Sox lost to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday 13-12 despite registering 23 hits.
Per ESPN Stats and Info:
The Red Sox had 23 hits Saturday and lost. The last team to do that in any 9-inning game? The 1930 Phillies.
Yeesh. The Red Sox got hits from every single starter except Triston Casas, and seven starters had multi-hit games. Four players (Rafael Devers, Masataka Yoshida, Trevor Story and Wilyer Abreu) had three hits or more.
The Sox scored multiple runs in four separate innings but weren't able to lock things down on the pitching front. Starter Chris Sale lasted just four innings, giving up six earned runs.
He's now 6-4 with a 4.88 ERA for the season. Four Red Sox relievers combined to give up six earned runs as well.
After the loss, Boston is now 72-70 on the season. They remain in fourth place in the American League East and are 7.0 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the AL.
It appears as if Boston will miss the playoffs for the third time in the four years in Chaim Bloom's tenure as Chief Baseball Officer. The Sox have finished last in the division in both 2020 and 2022 and could be headed for that fate again.
The Red Sox will play the Orioles again on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park.
First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m. ET as Grayson Rodriguez (BAL) pitches against rookie Brayan Bello (BOS).
Rodriguez is 5-3 for the year while Bello is 11-8.
