Boston Red Sox Join Disappointing Club with Tough Loss on Thursday
Any time you lose a game in which you were throwing a no-hitter through seven innings is very disappointing.
Any time you are mentioned alongside the 2023 Oakland Athletics in a stat line, that is also very disappointing.
Both things happened on Thursday for the Boston Red Sox, who lost 2-0 to the Miami Marlins, finishing off a three-game sweep at Fenway Park.
The loss dropped the Red Sox to 40-42 on the season and put them in a dubious club:
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
The Red Sox are the 2nd team this season to lose a game in which they pitched a no-hit bid of at least 7 innings. They join the Athletics, who did so on May 2 vs the Mariners.
It was another listless offensive performance for Boston, who managed just four hits in all. The only encouraging thing for the Sox was the pitching of rookie Bryan Bello, who continues to impress. He gave up two hits total, along with one run. Both hits came in the eighth inning.
Bello is now 5-5 on the season with a 3.08 ERA. In a season full of tough breaks for the Sox, he's been a nice reminder of what the future could hold.
With the loss, the Red Sox are in last place in the American League East by 15.0 games. They've lost five straight and seven of 10 games and are now 5.0 games back in the Wild Card race as well.
They'll open up a critical weekend series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. ET.
