The Boston Red Sox were swept by the Miami Marlins - at home - this week. The sweep dropped the Red Sox to 40-42 as we cross the halfway point of the season. The Sox finished last in the division in 2020 and 2022, and are in last place again right now.

They trail the first-place Tampa Bay Rays by 15.0 games and even trail the fourth-place Toronto Blue Jays by five games. The wild card shots are fading as well, as Boston is 5.0 games back of the final spot.

The Sox have now lost five straight games and seven of their last 10 as the offensive futility has become increasingly frustrating.

In fact, it's gotten so bad that the team is doing things it hasn't done in more than 40 years.

Alex Speier of the Boston Globe put out the information on Twitter:

The Red Sox have scored 11 runs in their last 7 games, tied for their fewest over a 7-game stretch since 1981. They scored 4 runs while getting swept by the Marlins. Grisly details from @byJulianMack: bostonglobe.com/2023/06/29/spo… via @BostonGlobe

Yeesh.

The Sox mustered only four hits in a 2-0 loss on Thursday. Injuries have hampered the team offensively a little bit this year as Trevor Story hasn't played all season, but the group should still be getting more production. Story wasn't there in April either when the team had no problem scoring runs.

The Red Sox will open up a new series on Friday night in Toronto and hope for better results.

First pitch against the Blue Jays is 7:07 p.m. ET.
