Boston Red Sox Pitcher Brayan Bello Joins Roger Clemens in Team History
Boston Red Sox pitcher Brayan Bello carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning on Thursday night against the Miami Marlins, continuing an elite run in June that the organization hasn't seen since Roger Clemens.
Per noted Sox Insider JP Long on Twitter:
In June, Brayan Bello posted a 2.14 ERA and allowed 0 HR.
Prior to Bello, the last Red Sox under the age of 25 to allow 0 HR and post an ERA that low over a 5-start span was Roger Clemens in 1986.
Bello: 2.14 ERA, 33.2 IP, 26 K, 8 BB
Clemens: 2.14 ERA, 33.2 IP, 27 K, 8 BB
While we all understand the steroid controversy that marred Clemens later in his career, he was undeniably great in his Red Sox tenure and is one of the best pitchers in franchise history, so being compared to him in any way is a great step for Bello.
He's 5-5 this season with a 3.08 ERA, having struck out 67 batters in 73.0 innings. He's started 13 games this season for Boston after appearing in 13 a season ago. The results are definitely better for Bello as he has a lower ERA, has thrown more innings and allowed 10 fewer hits. He's also shown the ability go deeper into games this year.
While the Red Sox are a disappointing 40-42 this year, Bello has been a nice reminder of how bright the future could be. Armed with prospects like Nick Yorke and Marcelo Mayer, in addition to young players like Triston Casas and Jarren Duran, the team is building a nice young nucleus.
The Red Sox will take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday at 7:07 p.m. ET.
