In this story:

The Chicago White Sox lost to the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, 5-1, to drop the series, but maybe the game represented a turning a point for Sox starter Lance Lynn.

Lynn was dominant on Sunday, going seven innings while allowing three runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out a whopping 16 batters. The bullpen surrendered the final two runs after his departure in the eighth inning.

This year has been a major struggle for the veteran. Even despite the great performance, he's now 4-8 on the season and still sports a bloated 6.51 ERA.

Lynn made some baseball history on Sunday with the outing:

Lance Lynn had 16 strikeouts Sunday, the most by a pitcher with an ERA of 6+ since 1913, when earned runs became official in the AL & NL (min. 5 starts).

It's certainly not a history that you want to make because it requires you to have had a bad season to that point, but the White Sox hope that it will help Lynn turn his season around, and keep them in the playoff race.

After the loss, Chicago is now 31-42 and 5.5 games back in the American League Central. After losing seven of their last 10, they are now in fourth place in the division.

Lynn is in his 12th year in the majors with the Cardinals, Rangers and White Sox. He owns a career record of 127-92 and a 3.66 ERA.

The White Sox will host the AL West leading Texas Rangers on Monday at 8:10 p.m. ET.
