Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates Each Make Team History in Wild Thriller on Saturday Night

The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates played one of the wildest games of the season on Saturday night, with each team setting a record in their own team histories.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds waited until the last days of the season to play one of the wildest games of the year on Saturday night.

The Reds led the game 9-0 after three innings only to lose 13-12. It was a brutal loss for Cincy, who now trails in the National League wild card race by 2.5 games.

The game made history for both franchises. Per ESPN Stats & Info:

The Pirates trailed the Reds 9-0 before coming back to win 13-12. The 9-run comeback marks the largest deficit overcome in a win in Pirates history. 

For the Reds, it's tied for the largest blown lead in a loss in franchise history.

Furthermore, on the Pirates' side, their was more history.

Per Jesse Rogers of ESPN:

Per @ESPNStatsInfo Teams are 0-205 when trailing by 9 runs this season. The Pirates were down 9-0, now up 13-9 in the 8th over the Reds. Pitt is 0-315 over the last 50 seasons when trailing by 9+ runs.

The Pirates are now 74-81 on the season. The Reds are 79-77. The comeback really didn't materialize until late for Pittsburgh. It was 9-1 Reds after the fifth inning but Pittsburgh scored five in the sixth and three in the seventh to tie the game, before getting four in the eighth.

The Reds scored two runs in the eighth and one in the ninth but that wasn't enough.

The Reds will look to keep their playoff hopes alive on Sunday when the two teams play again at 1:40 p.m. ET.
