The Cincinnati Reds pummeled the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night at Busch Stadium 19-2.

The win moved the Reds to 82-78 on the season and kept them at 1.5 games back of the Miami Marlins in the battle for the third and final wild card spot in the National League with two games to play.

The Reds hit six home runs in the victory, getting big flies from Nick Martini, Jonathan India, Spencer Steer, Noelvi Marte, Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Tyler Stephenson.

In addition to keeping them in the playoff hunt, the drubbing also made Reds' team history.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

the Reds and Cardinals have been playing each other since 1882

today’s 17-run win was the Reds’ 2nd-largest vs the Cards, behind only:

a 19-1 win on 8/12/1882

Yup, if it hasn't happened in 120 years, that's pretty cool. The Reds pounded out 17 hits with 11 different players checking in with a hit. Six different players had multi-hit efforts.

On the mound for Cincinnati, rookie left-hander Brandon Williamson went 6.0 innings and earned the win. He's now 5-5 this year with a 4.46 ERA and has been one of the many Reds rookies to debut and help contribute to this turnaround season.

The Reds and Cardinals will play again on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. ET.

Another Reds' rookie, Connor Phillips, will be on the mound. He's 1-0 with a 5.66 ERA and just made his debut a few weeks ago. He'll be opposed by Cardinals' lefty Drew Rom.
