Cincinnati Reds Infielder Elly De La Cruz Breaks His Own Record Already!
At the time of this posting, the Cincinnati Reds are leading the San Francisco Giants, 5-0, in the top of the eighth inning.
Part of the reason the Reds are still pitching a shutout is because of another insane throw by infielder Elly De La Cruz, who threw out a runner at the plate trying to score on a ball in the gap.
The throw from De La Cruz was clocked at nearly 100 mph and broke the Statcast record for the highest velocity throw from an infielder.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
fastest-tracked assists by infielders under Statcast (2015):
Today Elly De La Cruz: 99.8 mph
7/16/23 Elly De La Cruz: 97.9 mph
7/14/22 Oneil Cruz: 97.8 mph 9/20/20
Fernando Tatis Jr.: 97.3 mph 9/18/21
Fernando Tatis Jr.: 96.8 mph
6/20/22 Oneil Cruz: 96.7 mph
That's twice in a week that De La Cruz has broken the Statcast record as he just shows off more and more athleticism in his game. He's been a huge spark plug since being recalled from the minor leagues at the beginning of June.
In addition to his arm strength, he has great speed and power at the plate. He's hitting .281 with four home runs, 16 RBI and 17 stolen bases through 153 at-bats.
If the Reds hold onto win this game, they'll move to 52-46 on the year. They entered the day at 2.5 games back in the National League Central race.
The Reds will host the Arizona Diamondbacks in a weekend series at Great American Ball Park.
