Cincinnati Reds' Joey Votto Joins Exclusive List That Only Includes Hall of Famers
The Cincinnati Reds lost to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night by the score of 16-6.
Despite the loss, it was a good day at the plate for Reds legend Joey Votto, who went 2-for-4 with two home runs, two runs scored and three RBI.
His home runs off Drew Smyly put him in an exclusive club in team history - one that only includes Hall of Famers.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
With his 2nd homer of the day, Joey Votto now has 50 career HR vs the Cubs, becoming the 3rd player in Reds history with 50 HR vs a single opponent along with Frank Robinson (Cubs, Braves) and Johnny Bench (Braves).
Votto is certainly going to be an interesting case when it comes to his own Hall of Fame candidacy, but there's no doubt here: Joining this group of legends is incredibly impressive.
Since returning from injury this season, Votto is hitting .216 but he has powered 11 homers and 29 RBI. The 39-year-old continues to get on base at a solid clip, with an on-base percentage of .321, more than 100 points higher than his batting average.
Lifetime, Votto is a six-time All-Star who has led the majors in on-base percentage in seven different seasons. He has a career batting average of .296 and a career OBP of .411.
The loss was critical for the Reds, who lead the National League Central by just 0.5 games over the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs are charging hard, only trailing Cincinnati by 3.0 games themselves.
The two teams will play again on Thursday night as Luke Weaver (CIN) pitches against Jameson Taillon (CHC). First pitch is 8:05 p.m. ET.
