The youth movement was in full effect on Friday night as the Cincinnati Reds beat the San Diego Padres.

The Reds won, 7-5, in 11 innings to start the series off on the right foot, and they made some fun baseball history in doing so.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

The @Reds are the first team in MLB history to have one rookie hit a game-tying HR (Matt McLain) and another rookie hit a walkoff HR (Spencer Steer) in extra innings in the same game.

McLain's homer off of Ray Kerr tied the game in the bottom of the 10th while Steer's two-run shot off Drew Carlton won the game in the bottom of the 11th.

McLain's homer was his only hit as he went 1-5 while Steer went 2-3 with two walks. In addition to those two, phenom Elly De La Cruz was 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

With the win, the Reds are now 44-38 on the season. They remain one of the best stories in all of baseball. The Padres fell to 37-45 as their disappointing season continued.

The Reds are in first place in the National League Central by 1.0 game over the Milwaukee Brewers while the Padres remain mired in fourth in the National League West.

The two teams will play again on Saturday afternoon at Great American Ball Park as Michael Wacha (7-2, 2.90 ERA) pitches for San Diego against rookie southpaw Brandon Williamson (1-1, 5.82 ERA).

First pitch is scheduled for 1:40 p.m. ET.
