Cincinnati Reds Youngster Elly De La Cruz Has Stat Line Through 30 Games That No Player Has Ever Replicated
Cincinnati Reds rookie Elly De La Cruz is turning heads all around baseball. With great power, a great throwing arm and electrifying speed, De La Cruz is the kind of player that can bring great attention to a sport that always needs it.
Saturday's display of speed and instinct resulted in him making baseball history by stealing all three bases in the same sequence, and as it turns out, he's made even more history since being called up.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Elly De La Cruz is slated to play his 30th career game today. In the wake of yesterday's stolen base bonanza, De La Cruz has already become the only player in MLB history with 40 hits and 15 stolen bases in their first 30 games.
He has been an instant sparkplug for Cincinnati since being called up in early June. The team went from under .500 to 10 games over .500 in the span of that time and now leads the National League East by 2.0 games over Milwaukee.
Entering play on Sunday, he's hitting .328 with four homers, 16 RBI and 16 steals. He's posted an .899 OPS and is a major part of the Reds youth movement that includes Spencer Steer, Will Benson, Matt McLain, Andrew Abbott and Brandon Williamson.
The Reds will finish out the first half of the season on Sunday against the Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET as veteran lefty Wade Miley (5-2, 3.36 ERA) gets the ball for Milwaukee.
Then, it's off to the All-Star break.
