The Detroit Tigers made some unfortunate history on Tuesday night in a 1-0 loss against the Oakland Athletics.

Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:

The Tigers are the only MLB team to strike out 12+ batters while allowing 2 or fewer hits and 0 earned runs and yet lose the game (since earned runs became an official stat in 1913).

MLB teams had been a combined 319-0-1 when putting up those numbers over that time (reg & post).

Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal made his return off the injured list and struck out six over four innings while Reese Olson struck out five over the next five innings. Tyler Holton then struck out one in the tenth.

Sadly, while the pitching performance was great, the Tigers couldn't get anything going offensively, only mustering six hits of their own - all singles.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 37-47 on the season while the win moved the A's to 24-63. Detroit is 5.5 games behind the first-place Minnesota Twins in the American League Central at the time of this posting.
