Paul Sewald Left His Mark on The Seattle Mariners History Books

After trading Paul Sewald to the Arizona Diamondbacks this week, the Seattle Mariners said goodbye to a guy who is at the top of multiple lists in team history.

When the Seattle Mariners traded Paul Sewald to the Arizona Diamondbacks this week, they didn't just say goodbye to their current closer. They also said goodbye to a guy who is at the top of multiple leaderboards in team history.

Per Mariners research expert Alex Mayer:

Paul Sewald leaves the @Mariners as the franchise’s all-time leader in WHIP (0.926), H/9 (5.5) & opp. AVG (.170), ranking 2nd in K/9 (12.4) & 4th in ERA (2.88), min 100 IP. Thanks for everything, @ItsPaulSewald!

The 33-year-old Sewald blossomed into one of the top relievers in the American League since arriving in Seattle in 2021. Over his three years with the team, he saved 52 games and pitched to a 2.88 ERA. He was a critical and consistent part of a back end of the bullpen that changed a lot over the last three years. While names like Diego Castillo, Drew Steckenrider and Kendall Graveman came and went, there was Sewald, still standing strong, all of it culminating in the Mariners making the playoffs in the 2022 season.

Lifetime, he's in his seventh year in the big leagues with the Mets and Mariners. He'll go to a Diamondbacks team that is battling it out in both the National League West and the wild card races.

Arizona is 4.5 games back in the division and 1.0 game back in the wild card. The Mariners are currently 3.5 games back in the American League wild card race. They trail in the division by 6.0 games, but are in fourth place.

Sewald delivered a goodbye message to Mariners fans on Tuesday, which you can read here.
