Gunnar Henderson of the Baltimore Orioles Did Something That Hasn't Been Done in a Decade

With his huge performance on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles rookie Gunnar Henderson did something that hasn't been done in baseball for 10 years.

Baltimore Orioles star Gunnar Henderson did something that hasn't been done in the last decade of baseball history on Sunday.

As the O's beat the Oakland Athletics by a score of 12-1 in Oakland, Henderson went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. He also had four extra-base hits, including two doubles, a triple and a homer.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Gunnar Henderson had the 44th individual game since 1901 with multiple doubles, a triple and a home run.

The last player to do it was David Wright on June 23, 2013

(There have been 299 cycles in the regular season since 1901, plus one in postseason history)

So, Henderson's performance was significantly more rare than actually hitting for the cycle, which he finished a single shy of.

It's been a great rookie season for Henderson, who is making a case for American League Rookie of the Year honors. He's now hitting .249 with 21 home runs, 61 RBI, and six stolen bases. He's posted an .815 OPS and was hitting third in the O's order on Sunday.

After a lengthy trip on the West Coast, the Orioles flew back to Baltimore and enjoyed an off day on Monday. They'll start a big series with the division rival Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. Toronto is currently 1.0 game back in the chase for the American League wild card.

First pitch on Tuesday is 7:05 p.m. ET. Yusei Kikuchi (TOR) pitches against O's rookie Grayson Rodriguez.

Kikuchi is 9-4 with a 3.44 ERA while Rodriguez is 3-3 with a 5.44.
